Welcoming expats — or lack thereof — has consequences. And when minorities can’t see themselves as permanent fixtures in the country because their stories are considered less ‘local’, it takes its toll in real ways.
It works the same for any marginalized group, like people living with disabilities, LGBTQ people, or people from certain religions.
This phenomenon, known as “xenophobia,” is illustrated perfectly in a new gut-wrenching video by Singapore-based British expat Georgia. In her vlog, viewers see why a recent barrage of personal attacks on Georgia, who is a white immigrant working and living in Singapore perfectly exemplifies how xenophobia can be so harmful, it hurts.
No matter how you try to defend why a British expat should be welcomed in the Southeast Asian nation of immigrants or any country for that matter, you can’t deny the impact how toxic some news media organization do to make you feel as unwelcome as possible.
